Ed Trust–NY issues statement on New York City’s elimination of student safeguards for live instruction

The following statement can be attributed to Ian Rosenblum, Executive Director of The Education Trust–New York:

“New York City’s decision to ignore its own plan for live instruction during blended learning will likely widen the existing inequities in our education system and raises major questions about the amount of instruction that students who have been historically underserved will receive this fall. The city’s failure to follow through on its announcements – from remote learning to in-person instruction to the availability of child care when students are not in school – creates unnecessary chaos for families who are already facing greater levels of stress and uncertainty. This announcement points to the need for strong state oversight of school district reopening and for a clear requirement for the regular release of disaggregated data from all school districts on student instruction, engagement, and support this fall in order to ensure public transparency and accountability for the learning of all groups of students.”
