Crown Point Central School, a rural school in the North Country, tries to make completing the FAFSA as simple as possible for their families.

Some attend their annual FAFSA completion evening, where representatives from SUNY Plattsburgh are available to guide them through the process.

Other parents send their financial information to the school so counselors can work with their children to complete the application. And some parents come to the schools themselves to complete it with the help of a counselor.

“It’s really the student-centered approach and knowing who your families are and getting them what they need,” said School Counselor Joanne Mazzotte.

The school also makes a point to encourage all students – including those who think they want to enter the workforce – to complete the forms. In some cases, students aren’t aware of what aid they might be eligible.

That way if they change their mind at the last minute it’s done and they don’t have to worry about it,” Mazzotte said.

As of February 1, Crown Point, a small school with about two dozen seniors, had an estimated 67 percent completion rate, among the highest of schools in the region.
