The Education Trust–New York releases statement on Board of Regents amendment to graduation requirements

Sep 13, 2022 | Press Release

The following statement can be attributed to Dia Bryant, executive director of The Education Trust–New York:

“We are deeply concerned by the Board of Regents’ decision today to pass an amendment allowing students scoring as low as 50% on their Regents exams to pass and earn a diploma for the 2022-23 school year. This sends the wrong message to students and families beginning one of the most important school years in recent history. Instead of making it easier to graduate, the state should be urging schools to utilize their American Rescue Plan funds to better support students at risk of not graduating. The amendment continues a troubling trend by the Board of Regents to dilute graduation standards and raises serious concerns about whether our education system is preparing students for their postsecondary futures. As the board continues its review of the state’s graduation requirements, it is crucial that it protect and maintain meaningful expectations and direct resources to support all students in meeting them.”
