The Right to Read Screening and Panel Discussion on April 18 from 6-8 p.m. at the CUNY Graduate Center Recital Hall in New York, NY. Register here.

Reading proficiently by the end of third grade is the most important indicator of future student success. Yet less than half of all third graders are proficient in ELA in New York State.

Join The Education Trust–New York for a free screening of The Right to Read, a must-watch documentary on the early literacy crisis by Jenny Mackenize and executive produced by Levar Burton, that shares the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight for a fundamental civil right for our youngest generation: the ability to read.

Following the screening, local education leaders will participate in a panel discussion to discuss the science of reading — an evidence-based approach to literacy instruction — along with strategies for improving reading outcomes at the city and state levels. The Education Trust–New York will also share highlights from a new report on the state of early literacy across New York State.
