Equipping Children and Families With
What They Need to Thrive

Far too often, students of color — particularly Black, Latinx, Native American, Asian American and Pacific Islander students — and those from low-income backgrounds in New York are denied opportunities to thrive.

This starts in early childhood and continues through students’ experiences in college and the workforce.

Through our data analyses, research, policy, and advocacy, we strive to ensure students in New York have access to the high-quality, rigorous and culturally sustaining education they need to thrive, from birth through college.

What We’re Working On

Child Care

Child Care

New York’s child care crisis stems from long-standing racial and economic inequities. Our research offers recommendations for state and local leaders to create an equitable system and justly compensated workforce compensation.

Maternal and Child Health

Maternal and Child Health

Children are better poised for success in life when they have a healthy start. This includes comprehensive prenatal and postpartum care, health insurance for expectant families, and services for those with special or high needs.

Literacy

Literacy

All children can learn to read with instruction aligned to the science of reading, yet many students are denied the right to read — especially Black, Latinx, and Native American students and those from low-income backgrounds.

Educator Diversity

Educator Diversity

Although New York State is home to one of the most diverse student populations in the country, the makeup of the state’s educator and school leader workforce is majority White, failing to reflect our students who are mostly of color.

School Funding

School Funding

Research shows that sustained increases in school funding can have lasting benefits for students of color and from low-income backgrounds. Equitable funding in New York is crucial to ensure students have the resources necessary to thrive.
